This summer, our team had the pleasure of working with four talented individuals during their summer internships at Alten Construction! Not only do our interns gain valuable hands-on experience while assisting on a variety of different projects, they become part of the Alten Construction family — no matter where they end up in their future endeavors.
In the program, students are paired with a construction industry professional. If a student wants to become a project manager, they are partnered with someone in a similar position, such as a superintendent or project manager, to shadow daily. In addition to attending weekly meetings and working directly with that contact, these interactions provide the interns with a real-world view.

Mason Stenberg, a senior at California Polytechnic State University majoring in construction management
Q: What has your role or title been for this internship?
A: Project Engineer Intern.
Q: What has been your favorite part of this internship so far?
A: I would have to say my favorite part about this summer so far has been getting to work with the current project engineer who has a lot of valuable information to share and helps make it easy to learn new concepts by physically demonstrating certain things.
Q: You have interned with Alten Construction previously. Why did you want to intern with them again?
A: I wanted to be an intern for Alten Construction again because of how much I enjoyed my experience with this company last summer, as well as receiving excellent feedback on how to deal with difficult situations that I will encounter in this industry throughout my career after school.
Q: What's been the most challenging part of this internship so far?
A: I think the most challenging part about it has been trying to make sure the as-built drawings stay up to date and having to repeatedly follow up on items with various subcontractors to meet specific deadlines.
Q: What do you hope to take away from this year's internship?
A: I hope to take away a few things, including improving my technical skills, building a better professional network and gaining insights on some of the best practices in the construction industry.
Hayden Simon, a junior at California State University, Chico majoring in construction management
Q: What has your role or title been for this internship?
A: Project Engineer Intern.
Q: What has been your favorite part of this internship so far?
A: I've been lucky enough to be working on two sites throughout the week, so being able to see two projects at the same time and how they progress has been one of my favorite parts.
Q: What do you hope to take away from this internship?
A: I hope to have a better understanding of construction as a whole. My classes have been helpful, but I feel that the hands-on experience will make me see a different side you can't really see in the classroom.
Q: What's been the most challenging part of this internship so far?
A: The most challenging part of this internship has been learning stuff they didn’t really teach us how to do in the classroom. For instance, we had never really been taught how to write RFIs, so I didn't really know what to do in the beginning, but over time I've gotten a lot better.

Q: What has been your favorite part of this internship so far?
A: Walking around the job and learning new things.
Q: What do you hope to take away from this internship?
A: Experience and knowledge.
Q: What's been the most challenging part of this internship so far?
A: Learning new software.

A: Having fun and having helpful mentors.

A: Better communication skills and more confidence.
