ALAMEDA, Ca. — Founded 28 years ago by Bob and Shannon Alten, Alten Construction is a flourishing commercial construction company that began its humble journey in 1995. Since then, the company’s history is peppered with significant moments that have propelled them forward and contributed to their overall success in the Bay Area.
The commercial construction company’s first project took place in 1995 when the team of three completed a 23-bathroom renovation for the College of Alameda, Laney College and Merritt College, part of the Peralta Community College District.
This year, almost three decades later, Alten Construction returned to the College of Alameda to construct a new building for the campus.
“It is incredibly fulfilling to return to our first project after 28 years,” said Bob Alten, president and CEO of Alten Construction. “We’ve come a long way since we first started, and we’re proud to be a well-respected general contractor in the area. Being chosen for this new building is a testament to our team’s professionalism, hard work and dedication to the community and brings our legacy here full circle. It’s extremely rewarding.”
This go-around, Alten Construction will complete a $30 million, 40,000-square-foot transportation technology facility for the college that will host three department programs, including Auto Body and Paint, Automotive Technology and Diesel Mechanics.
Located at 555 Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway, the mission of College of Alameda is to serve the educational needs of its diverse community by providing comprehensive and flexible programs and resources that empower students to achieve their goals. The school serves over 6,000 unduplicated students every semester from the San Francisco Bay Area.
“This new building will bring students a step closer to living wage employment and well prepared for earning a baccalaureate degree in other advanced schools of technology in preparation for future management and teaching careers in the automotive industry and diesel mechanics industry,” said Dr. Diana Bajrami, acting president for College of Alameda. “We are so glad to partner with Alten construction as we value their commitment to green building practices and their service to COA/PCCD.”
Since Alten Construction’s inception, many of the company’s projects have been public education buildings, from elementary schools to colleges. And even as the years go by and the company continues to grow at a steady pace, Alten takes great pride in leaving a legacy in the wonderful community that they call home and looking back at how they first started.
