ALAMEDA, Calif. — Alten Construction recently began modernization work on the Alameda High School Swim Center, part of the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD).
Previously known as the Emma Hood Swim Center, the replacement project scope is comprised of improved aquatic facilities, including a new 12-lane by 30-meter competition pool for swim and water polo, a four-lane practice pool, new pool deck with lighting and all new non-climbable fencing.
The project will also provide a new tennis court to replace a demolished court as needed for the enlarged pools, a new equipment building for all the pool equipment, restroom and locker room upgrades, a new scoreboard and lights for the pools and various sitework upgrades to accommodate access into the revised pool facility.
The City of Alameda is providing 50 percent of the funding for the project. The remaining 50 percent is being drawn from the Measure B facilities bond, which community members approved in 2022.
“Alameda High School’s swimming facilities have long been plagued by mechanical issues, which resulted in interruptions to both our student athletes’ practices and the City of Alameda’s recreational swim program,” said Pasquale Scuderi, superintendent of AUSD. “We are thrilled about the opportunity to provide a state-of-the-art swim facility and grateful to both the city for its partnership and the community of Alameda for its support of the Measure B bond.”
Demolition of the existing pool and adjacent finishes started last month. The swim center will be closed for the entirety of the project, with current swim programs moved to the Encinal Swim Center located at 230 Central Avenue in Alameda. The project is slated for completion in fall 2025.
