Alten Construction, a full-service San Francisco Bay Area commercial construction company, has recently completed a $25 million renovation of Tauzer Gymnasium at Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC). Funded by Measure H, the project modernizes the 90-year-old facility with updated infrastructure, accessibility features and athletic amenities.
The remodel spanned three buildings and consisted of major infrastructure upgrades, including new HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire suppression systems; new windows and doors; elevator installation; lighting upgrades; a diesel backup generator; and the removal of the swimming pool.
To enhance the student and community experience, the project also delivered new sports equipment, bleachers, wall finishes, flooring, site work, paving and courtyard improvements.
The renovation began in January 2024. During construction, Tauzer Gymnasium was closed and all programs were temporarily relocated to Analy Village on SRJC’s Santa Rosa campus.
Built in 1935, Tauzer Gymnasium provided locker rooms and instructional areas for physical education and quickly became a hub of student life. In its early years, the facility also hosted assemblies, rallies and dances. A 1983 remodel introduced weight training facilities, and the most recent renovation continues that legacy by adapting the historic space to meet modern needs.
Over the years, Alten Construction has completed a number of historic renovation projects to help preserve buildings of the past for the enjoyment of future generations, including Napa County, Historical Courthouse repairs, Goodman Library, Maritime Center and Old Novato City Hall, among others.
