Alten Construction collaborated with San Mateo Union High School District and Quattrocchi Kwok Architects to turn a small, existing theater and gymnasium into a new gymnasium complex with spectator seating for 1,500. Extensive structural steel and retrofitting were required on this project. The existing wall and load-bearing columns, which separated the theater and the gym, were removed while the existing roof trusses were shored. In place of the removed columns, Alten Construction installed a 110’ plate girder that spanned the length of the building to support the roof and the building structure. We also placed new interior and exterior structural steel braces and approximately eighty-four micropiles to seismically anchor the remodeled structure.
In addition to structural and seismic upgrades, we made fire/life/safety, accessibility, door and hardware, mechanical and electrical improvements. This project also provided new finishes and light fixtures at the lobbies, locker rooms and physical education classroom areas.
