College Marin Diamond Physical Education Center

Alten Construction teamed up with Kwan Henmi Architecture & Planning and the Marin Community College District to abate, gut and remodel the physical education complex at the College of Marin's Kentfield Campus. The renovation included new mechanical and electrical systems; new solar panels for heating the existing pool; a new, exterior steel trellis; new irrigation and landscaping as well as new brick pavers and asphalt and concrete paving; a new gymnasium floor; and new administration offices, classrooms, locker rooms and weight and exercise rooms. In April 2010, the Diamond Physical Education project was awarded LEED Gold certification. This certification came as the result of concerted efforts in all aspects of design and construction. Alten Construction re-purposed glue laminated beams from the existing structure for benches in the new complex and diverted approximately 95% of debris from landfills by recycling demolished concrete and steel from the original buildings. Alten Construction also placed new solar panels on the roof for heating the existing pool and installed and commissioned new, energy efficient plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems.
