Alten Construction teamed with the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and Perkins + Will to construct the Hillblom Center: a new laboratory space for research programs. Awarded the Top Research Facilities Project 2007 by the North Bay Business Journal, this laboratory project was built within an existing, first-story shell space of an occupied building. During construction, the Institute's auditorium, laboratories and administrative offices remained in use, making it essential to implement a diligent air quality control plan. In addition to other green practices, such as diverting construction debris from landfills and installing recycled materials, specifically light gauge metal framing, Marshfield wood doors and Loneco flooring, the air quality control plan ensured that this project was LEED Silver certified.
