Alten Construction teamed up with the City of Richmond and Hamilton + Aitken Architects for the historic renovation of the Maritime Child Development Center. During World War II, this childcare facility was built in Richmond in order to care for children whose mothers were working in the Kaiser shipyards. In addition to being a National Park Service landmark, the Maritime Center still functions as a childcare center today. During construction in 2010, Alten Construction placed a new concrete foundation; structurally repaired and seismically upgraded the existing wood-framed building; replaced the roofing; salvaged and reinstalled historic materials as well as new materials; installed new mechanical and electrical systems and site utilities; and made landscaping and exterior courtyard improvements. Green building practices were implemented, and this building was awarded LEED Gold status in 2012.
